Due Dates & Homework


This page list homework and important due dates for any projects, essays, test, and homework. Please, refer to this page often to find out what work your child needs to complete outside of class, or when your child needs to study for an upcoming test. Also, dates will be listed for any upcoming test, so that you may be aware as parents, when your child will be taking any test in my class.



2015-2016 School Year 


9th Grade Literature: (All Periods)
  • Due December 16th, 2017
    • Students have at least two more tries to master the standard for the essay. Between December 7-16th, the student may resubmit their essay at any time to improve their grade. Once they have mastered the standard their grades will be submitted. 

  • Due December 8, 2017
    • Printed copy of Epic Simile and Extended Metaphors. Must be atleast 4 lines and typed in MLA format. Can add a picture for extra credit on the assignment.

    • Final Draft of Hobbes Essay with completed Work Cited Page
    •   Bring Printed Copy to Class and (It must be uploaded onto turnitin.com on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 11:59 pm.

    • T.E.X.A.S Strategy:  Body Paragraph Practice-- Rewrite the paragraph below to create a GOOD body paragraph using the TEXAS Strategy. 
  • "In Alice Walker’s "To Hell with Dying," Mr. Sweet was a good companion for the narrator and her siblings. Mr. Sweet always made the narrator feel special. She said that she loved to be around him and was overjoyed whenever he would visit her in the third paragraph on page 72. Mr. Sweet played with the children just as if he were a child himself. Mr. Sweet also displayed a great deal of respect for the narrator and her family. Even though his alcoholism and lifestyle was a bad influence on the children, his virtues far outweighed his faults. Mr. Sweet had a positive impact on the children that would last their entire lives. He was compassionate, caring, and honest, and the children learned to respect themselves and others from their experiences with Mr. Sweet. He also inspired the children to succeed. Mr. Sweet's lifestyle did not make him an excellent role model for the children, but he was always an excellent companion".

  • This assignment is only for those that did not pass the MCSD Benchmark Assessment. Students are to login to Canvas using their MCSD GTID# and password. Students will then complete the quiz assigned, which can be found under the link labeled assignments or quizzes.  Once the test is complete, it will be scored immediatly. Students will have until 6:00pm to complete the assignment. It is timed.

    • Write the sentences down and complete the practice below. Be prepared to share your during class tomorrow: 
    • Indirect and Direct Characterization Practice
      Directions: Tell whether the example sentences are using Direct or Indirect characterization. Then,  rewrite each example as the opposite characterization.
      1.Terry doesn't like pets. In fact, he hates every type of animal, but especially dogs and cats.
      2.The man's clothes were filthy, probably since he'd been sleeping on newspapers all night.  They were ragged and filled with holes.
      3.Martha warned Toby, "She'll never know who broke the window unless somebody says something..”
      4.Parker really cares about other people.  He  thinks everyone deserves love.
      5.When she heard her baby crying last night, she just gritted her teeth and turned up her iPod. and ran away because somebody tried to start a fight with his friend.
      6.Sonya is very smart. She is the smartest girl in the class, but she is very humble. She never brags about it.

      • Finish Story Map of Create a map of your story that includes the following: Characters (Major & Minor); Setting; Plot: Exposition, 3 Rising action, Climax, 3 Falling Action, Resolution and Denouement; Pictures and description of each include textual support for each plot event.; Also, describe and explain your symbol. Turn in to class.
      • Amend your narrative: type, add MLA Format, sensory details, clear plot, symbol, imagery, change use of the word said, and correctly punctuated dialogue. Bring hard copy, printed, to class.

      • Upload your MLA Formatted Narrative Essay to turnitin .com. 
  • Due Wednesday September 14, 2015
    • Write a narrative using symbolism and be prepared to present to the class. Your story must be 2-3 pages in length. You may use one of the following symbols listed below or one of your choosing: Rose, owl, ring, or apple.

    • Complete your Mask of the Read Death Questions (story and questions are in the DropBox). 
    • 3rd Period- Turn in your Symbolism Charts. You must have at least 5 symbols with your interpretation and textual support.
  • Due Friday, August 28, 2015  (3rd Period this is due August 31, 2015)
    • Complete your Theme Charts with 4 quotes. You may decorate and color it. Make sure that your name is on it. It is due time you walk in the door. The story is on the drop box under Handouts if you need the story!
  • Due: Friday, August 21 -Friday, August 28th 2015
    • Students can have a Pop Quiz on Figurative Language reviewed in the song at anytime between the remainder of this week or next week. Students need to be vigilant in making sure they understand all the types of Figurative Language and can give an example of each.

    • Students will have to find at least one example of an Understatement and an Idiom to add to our Figurative Language Song. Only the best example will be used for the song. All students must come with an example.

    • Students need to make sure they sign up for the Remind 101 accounts. All the information is here! Also, leave a comment on the website! These are both graded assignments!

Advanced Composition: Creative Writing 

  • Due Friday September 10, 2015
    • Come to school dressed and behaving as a character from your story. To receive credit you must wear a name tag and behave as that character all day. 
    • Turn-in your story maps
    • Continue working on your Novels.
  • Due Friday September 4, 2015
    • Create a map of your story that includes the following:  Characters (Major & Minor),  Setting (Timeline), Conflict, Plot: (Subplots/Parallel Plots), Exposition, Rising action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution/Denouement, Pictures and description of each. Also, create visuals of each scene using stock pictures, or actual pictures.

    • Complete a PowerPoint presentation and one page paper in MLA Format, 12 pt. font, with black ink and double spaced. It should answer the following questions be prepared to present to class: What genre will your novel be? Why? Who is your target Audience? Why? How long should your novel be? What theme or message are you thinking of incorporating in your novel? How will it relate to your readers? What are some techniques to improve your chances of success? Who are other popular Self-Published Authors in this area?
Journalism & Newspaper
  • Due: September 11, 2015
    • Complete Journalism Research project-- Research a famous are important journalist in American Journalism History. Create a power point detailing their career: Where they worked, how they worked, their working philosophy, what made them famous, and include informationabout groundbreaking articles/photography that these individuals wrote. Finally, discuss how they inspire you as a future journalist.  Present the information to class and be sure to use reference books and online articles to explore topics. Time: three days of class and homework time for research and preparing your PowerPoint presentation..
      • Requirements: Presentations Time is 4 minutes minimum – 8 minutes maximum. All presentations must be prepared using PowerPoint. You may not read from a written report. You should develop an outline to use while presenting, and you should have an extra copy of the outline to give to the teacher before the presentation begins.
    • Continue working on Article Pitches for the October Newspaper. 
  • Due: August 31, 2015
    • Published and Polished Newspaper Article to be printed in ECAC Cougar Chronicles.
